SCHOOL UPDATE
Dear Families,
The sunshine this week brought with it lots of smiles, t-shirts and shorts! It feels like there has been a swift change in season! A reminder that water bottles, sunscreen and hats are advisable as we continue to enjoy this great weather.
THANK YOU SCHOOL COUNCIL!
We would like to extend a big thank you to our School Advisory Council in gratitude for their efforts and engagement with the school community this year. Due to their initiative, Lancaster has enjoyed our first Read-A-Thon, MaxSold Fundraiser and many staff appreciation days. Students have also enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy hot lunch throughout the year thanks to our parent volunteers. Most recently the school-wide milkshake day was a wonderful way to recognize student participation in the Read-A-Thon. Each Lancaster student was also gifted a very sharp looking sling bag from School Council - a great way to stash a water bottle, soccer cleats or a towel and bathing suit as the weather warms up. Remember to put your child's name or initials on the bag so that lost bags are more likely to find their owners. Thank you School Council for your efforts this year in helping to build connections and joy in our school community.
DROP-OFF ZONE UPDATE
You will note in the newsletter a change that we are implementing to accommodate an additional bus that has been added to Mother Teresa. While our start and end times are staggered we are asking that families ensure they are not leaving their vehicle unattended in that drop-off zone during the times indicated. This should not change our access to that location during the times that are needed for drop-off and pick-up but it does mean that we need to ensure we are using that location as it is intended to be used - dropping off and picking up students - but not parking there for any extended period of time. This area MUST be cleared of vehicles from 8:40-9:00 and 3:25-3:45 for the Mother Teresa bus.

PLANTABLES FUNDRAISER:
As planting season is fast approaching it is time to schedule your "Plantables" delivery! This fundraiser was a success last year, the plants were healthy and hearty, and the online system made it very easy for families to order. Funds raised by this initiative will support a variety of school projects including purchasing "consumables" for outdoor play (balls, sand toys, sleds, etc...), and materials for experiential learning in classrooms. Order plants for yourself, or gift them to family, friends or neighbours - what a kind gesture towards someone you care about. Simply visit the site and use our school code (LDPSGROWS) at checkout.
Your leaders in learning,
Lani Fox and Sara O'Hearn
PARENT REMINDERS:
- We have a few parents who are using the staff parking lot to drop off or pick up their child. This creates unsafe conditions for students who are walking to school and are using the correct drop off locations and walking to the playground. Please do not use the staff parking lot for the purpose of dropping off or picking up your child - additional vehicles at these times is counterintuitive to preserving a safe space for all students. Students can be dropped off using the laybys on Lancaster Drive or drive-thru zone, and then use the walkways on either side of the school to walk to the playground at the back of the school.
- We continue to require families to remain off the main pavement area during drop-off and pick-up times. This practice has had a positive impact on student safety as we are more clearly able to see students connecting with families as they wait at the path or make their way to their meeting spot at the beginning of the day.
Kindergarten Registration
If you have a child who will turn 4 or 5 by the end of December, you will find information about online registration for 2022-23 using the following link. It is important that we receive registrations before the end of the school year so that we can plan for class placements in the fall.
https://www.limestone.on.ca/news/what_s_new/kindergarten_registration_for_september_2022 We look forward to planning some events to welcome our littlest learners later in the spring!

TRACK AND FIELD
Lancaster staff have kick-started to get athletes interested and ready to participate in the track and field meets in June. During Phys. Ed. classes staff have been working to get students familiar with the various events and providing opportunities for students to “test their metal”.
Based on the class results shared with track coaches, students will be invited to try out for events where they are showing particular strength. Athletes are able to qualify for up to three events plus a relay. By mid-May athletes will be selected based on tryouts to be a part of the team that we bring to the Regional LESAA track meet on Wednesday, June 1st.
Track meets take place during the school day at Caraco Track. Students will be bused to the event and parents/guardians will be responsible for picking their child up at the end of the day. We are sharing this information in advance so that parents can plan ahead, or arrange with other families, to have someone available for transportation at the end of the day. More information about the schedule for the day and permission forms will be shared with the team at a later date. Athletes who qualify at our regional meet will attend the District Championship meet on Wednesday, June 7th
Events are as follows:
Atom (Grade 3-4)/Bantam (Grade 5-6)/Senior (Grade 7/8)
100 M
200 M
400 M
800 M
1200 M
4 x 100 M Relay
Long Jump
Triple Jump
SENIORS ONLY

LIFE AND LEARNING MOMENTS AT LANCASTER:
VOLUNTEERS IN SCHOOL & ON FIELD TRIPS
Parent, guardian and community volunteers play an essential role in our school communities. We welcome the participation of volunteers who bring a wide range of talents and skills to school life that enrich and support both students and staff.
Board policy states that people wishing to volunteer are required to complete a mandatory screening process that includes a police criminal record check, sometimes better known as a CPIC. This excludes guest speakers or presenters but does include parents/guardians attending school field trips who will be assuming supervision responsibilities for students. Where, at the request of the principal, a parent/guardian is participating on a field to attend to the needs of their child, a CPIC may not be required (a condition of this situation must be that this parent is never alone with children other than their own). In this case, an offense declaration would be acceptable. These situations must be discussed in advance with the school principal.
CPICs must be updated and approved every three years. During interim years, volunteers must complete the annual Offence Declaration Form. Volunteers are encouraged to complete their CPIC application forms early in the school year, as there may be a waiting period involved with the processing and approval. Currently, there is variability on whether or not school volunteers are charged for the police criminal record check.
Kingston Police offers an automated online system for submitting your CPIC for approval.
Ontario Provincial Police requires you to download the form and then take it to your nearest OPP Detachment for approval.
You may also obtain copies of the applications from your school.
For the 2021-2022 school year, all volunteers are required to follow the LDSB Mandatory Vaccination Disclosure Protocol.
All volunteers are required to sign in and out of the office as do all school visitors. You may be asked to wear a visitor pass while in the school.
